It gives us a bigger reach," said Christian Sandoval, the senior distribution coordinator.The new layout of the warehouse has also improved efficiency, with larger shopping aisles and a redesigned flow that makes it easier for patrons to navigate the distribution process. "What I love is the fact that the new carts and the way we redesigned the warehouse (make) it easier to get people (through the distribution process)," Sandoval remarked, highlighting the organization's commitment to optimizing the experience for those they serve.

The expansion has also brought about the addition of a walk-in cooler and freezer, which allow the pantry to better preserve and store a wider variety of perishable food items. "We saw that beginning to decrease about four months ago," he said.Despite this trend, the pantry remains committed to addressing the ongoing needs of the community. Projections indicate that the pantry will serve approximately 160,000 guests in the new fiscal year, highlighting the persistent challenges faced by many Elgin residents.

Diez shared that approximately 30% of those served are children, 21% are ages 25 to 35, 20% are 26 to 50, and 10% are over 60.
